Boys need HPV vaccination too says BMA
HPV vaccination should be extended to cover boys as well as girls, says the BMA Public Health Committee, in a resolution passed at its annual conference.
The proposal, designed to reduce the circulation of the virus in the population, also encourages more education and training for teenagers about safe sex as part of vaccination programme.
Dr Chris Spencer Jones, chairman of the BMA Public Health Committee, said vaccination of boys was important as immunity from HPV may only last six years and then girls may be at risk of infection.
‘If we are really going to eradicate this cause of cervical cancer then shouldn't we also include boys?' he said.
