Adverse events reported in US following HPV vaccination

27 Aug 2009

More than 12,000 reports of adverse events following immunisation (AEFIs) were reported by girls aged 11 and 12 who received the quadrivalent HPV vaccine in the US between June 2006 and January 2009.

A US study of reports to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System found 12,424 reports following licensing – a rate of 53.9 reports per 100,000 doses distributed,

A total of 772 reports, or 6.2% of all reports were for serious AEFIs, including 32 reports of death. The researchers noted that the rates of venous thrombosis were higher than the rates compared with other vaccines, at 0.2 per 100,000.
