BMA Council member begins 'Bevan's run' against health bill
A BMA Council member has begun a 160-mile run from Cardiff to London to protest against the Government's health reforms.
Yesterday Dr Clive Peedell, consultant clinical oncologist at the James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough and a member of the BMA Council, set off on his journey from the statue of NHS-founder Aneurin Bevan in Cardiff and will finish at the Department of Health in Westminster
The ‘Bevan's run' will also stop at Prime Minister David Cameron's constituency in Witney and Number 10 Downing Street.
A rally with speeches from healthcare directors and doctors, including Lancashire GP David Wrigley, will be held en route at the Prime Minister's constituency and a dossier of concerns will be personally delivered to his constituency office. A ‘Bevan's postcard' summarising concerns will also be brought to health secretary Andrew Lansley at the Department of Health in Whitehall.
The organisers hope the event will raise public awareness of the issue and persuade politicians to reconsider the Health and Social Care Bill.
Dr Peedell said: 'I believe that a publicly funded, publicly provided and publicly accountable NHS is the most cost effective and equitable way to deliver healthcare to our nation's population.'
