Gerada to join 'Bevan's run' against health bill

By Madlen Davies | 12 Jan 2012
RCGP chair Dr Clare Gerada will be running the last leg of a 160-mile run to protest against the Government's health reforms.
This Sunday, Dr Gerada, accompanied by her dog Lucy, will join organiser and BMA Council member Dr Clive Peedell for the final stage of his run from from Cardiff to London.

They will begin at Hyde Park and head towards Whitehall where they will personally deliver a ‘Bevan's postcard' outlining their concerns over the health bill addressed to health secretary Andrew Lansley at the Department of Health in Whitehall.

A rally with speeches from a host of health leaders - and one 'mystery speaker' - will then take place outside the Department of Health's headquarters in Richmond House, before the group will run to Downing Street to deliver another ‘Bevan's postcard' to the Prime Minister's official residence.

Though concerned about the possibility of rain, Dr Gerada says she will be running to raise public awareness to the potential damage that could be caused by the Government's NHS reforms.

She said: 'I'm running as the RCGP has raised serious concerns about the health bill from the outset. It poses the risk of significant harm to the NHS and to patients.'

'Also, I've been watching Clive Peedell and I'm impressed with anyone who can run from Cardiff to London. He seems to be tweeting as often as he's running!'
