Dr Dean Marshall has challenged the existing members for a place on the GPC negotiating team as he stands down from the role as chair of GPC Scotland.
It means that one of the existing four GPC negotiators is at risk of losing their position. The unusual scenario is due to play out this week, with the vote to conclude on Thursday (19 July).
The existing members of the GPC negotiating team are Dr Peter Holden, GP in Derbyshire, Dr Beth McCarron-Nash, GP in Cornwall, Dr Chaand Nagpaul, GP in North London, and Dr Richard Vautrey, a GP in Leeds.
As chair of GPC Scotland, Dr Marshall has negotiated alongside the team on a large number of topics.
He commented: ‘It was a very difficult decision to make to decide whether to stand because the other negotiators have been my colleagues for the last five or six years and they are a good team.
‘However in the situation we find ourselves in, where in England we are at crisis point, I think I can make a difference and that my skills are needed. That is why I have decided to stand.'
It comes as Dr Alan McDevitt, a GP from Clydebank, was elected as Dr Marshall's successor as chairman for GPC Scotland. Dr Marshall has led the committee since 2006, while Dr McDevitt has served as joint deputy chairman of the committee since 2009.
