NHS Direct discriminates against Klingon speakers

If there are NHS Direct translation services for Cherokee and Laotian speakers, it's an outrage that Klingon speakers - of whom there are many more - should have to muddle through with no-one to help.

Years ago (and I mean years ago) I wrote a column about my encounter with a Klingon Warrior. This was so long ago it happened before the arrival of the undertaker's friend, NHS Direct.

Despite the massive (£250,000) annual investment in NHS Direct's translation services my intergalactic pal would have no more success making himself understood now than he did then (he actually brought a friend along to interpret ).

NHS Direct services are available in Cherokee (total number of speakers in England & Wales – zero ), Cebuano (ditto), Laotian (there's one guy out there, apparently. A big "sabai di bo" to you mate) but not in Klingon.

This is an outrage. More people speak Klingon in my practice area than speak Welsh*.

We should all ring 08 45 46 47 day and night and ask them "tlhIngan Hol Dajatlh'a' " ("Do you speak Klingon?") until the Dept. of Health sees the error of its ways.

( * unpublished anecdotal evidence based on a survey of two local public houses)
