No appraisal cover cash in global sums

Practices' global sums do

not include cash to pay for locums to cover GPs when they are being appraised, the Department of Health has confirmed.

But officials have eased fears GPs will be forced to meet the cost of cover from their own pockets by announcing an extra £13 million to pay for appraisal for PMS GPs. The cash comes on top of £17 million for GMS GPs.

GP negotiators had questioned ministers over appraisal funding after the £17 million was listed separately in allocations to PCOs for next year.

The cash had been expected to be included in practices' income and GPC joint-deputy chair Dr Hamish Meldrum had warned it may not be enough.
