Number of measles cases hits record high

Experts have warned of a measles epidemic after official statistics showed the number of cases has soared to a record high.

Figures published by the Health Protection Agency showed there were 1,049 cases of confirmed measles in England and Wales at the end of October, outstripping last year's total of 990 cases.

In August the Department of Health allocated £5.5m to draft in GPs to run MMR vaccine clinics across the country.
