Nurse-led helpline denies call costings

Scotland's nurse-led helpline NHS 24 has denied reports that each call to the service has cost £130 in its first 18 months of operation.

Newspaper reports said the helpline had taken 570,000 calls since it was set up last year at a cost of over £75 million

In a statement, NHS 24 said it was impossible to do a cost per call analysis as the helpline was still being developed. A spokeswoman said the helpline had cost £8 million in 2001, £32 million in 2002 and £43 million in 2003/4.
