Nurses will need extra legal cover

Medicolegal advisers have warned GPs to make sure their independent nurse prescribers have their own professional indemnity insurance.

Dr Frances Szekely, senior medical claims adviser at the Medical Defence Union, said it was increasingly seeing claims based on the actions of nurse practitioners.

'In the past the claims we used to see against nurses were about syringing ears, taking out stitches and giving injections. Increasingly we're seeing ones related to misdiagnosis and prescription errors,' she said.

The MDU will charge practices with a prescribing nurse up to £285 extra per year.
