Occupational work is not a GP's job

I was interested to read your article on the issuing of well notes by GPs.

I am senior partner of a GP practice in Burnley, Lancashire, and am involved in a pilot for condition management on behalf of the Department of Work and Pensions, which has been highly successful.

I do tend to agree with Professor Sayeed Khan's views, and at the same time support Dr John Canning in his assertion that we, as GPs, are not trained to advise on managing and assessing occupational risks.

This job should be the responsibility of independent occupational health doctors.

Indeed, these doctors may develop a relationship with employers that will be good

for patients and will not threaten patient confidentiality.

Dr Narendra Singh, East Lancashire
