Oestrodiol patch eases vaginal pain and dryness
An ultra-low dose of oestrodiol relieves vaginal pain and dryness in post-menopausal women, say US researchers.
But the patch failed to benefit other domains of sexual function they add.
The 417 women in the trial – aged 60 to 80 years - were randomised to receive the 0.014mg/day oestrodiol patch or a placebo.
Questionnaires were used to assess sexual function at baseline and at four, 12 and 24 months.
Women given the oestrodiol patch reported a significant 4.3 point improvement in vaginal pain and dryness compared to those given placebo.
But although there was some evidence of improvements in orgasm frequency and quality with the patch, the significance was not significant.
