Independents' Day

Patient choice? All I got was a choice riposte!

I was very interested, impressed and slightly amused to see I am going to have to ask my patients to make a choice on their treatment.

I have now tried this: I offered a patient the choice between an ace inhibitor and an angiotensin 2 antagonist.

The polite version of what he said was: 'You are the expert, you have trained for a long time, you tell me.'

I wonder if this is the desired response expected by the Government who obviously have not made sure that all patients have undertaken full training in order to be able to work out their choices.
