At the heart of general practice since 1960

PCT won't let me do my own on-call

Dr Brian Lightowler has had his request to carry on doing his own on-call work rejected by his PCT.

Dr Lightowler, a singlehanded GP in Stockport, said he regarded his patients as 'members of my family' and wanted to carry on providing cover 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Stockport PCT has refused to give him accreditation, arguing he could not meet Government standards for out-of-hours providers.

Dr Lightowler said he believed out-of-hours was 'a traditional part' of general practice. 'It's a matter of policy. They say I am a good doctor. I am happy to do the job, but there is no facility to do it. The trust say I can't demonstrate my abandonment times.'
