PPIs unrelated to Cancer

Use of proton pump inhibitors does not appear to increase the risk of colorectal cancer, a Dutch study reports.

PPI use increases serum gastrin levels and bacterial overgrowth, which may lead to toxic bile salt formation, leading to some concerns that the drugs could increase cancer risk. But an analysis of almost 600 cases of colorectal cancer, each with 20 matched controls, found no association with ever-use compared with never users and no duration-related or dose-related effect.
