Practice five minutes from meltdown

Dr Stuart Baldwin suspects his practice would have been forced to relocate if a recent fire caused by teenage vandals had lasted moments longer.

The fire at his surgery in Nayland, Essex, started in a wheelie bin, spread to the roof and was within five minutes of burning the building down.

Dr Baldwin said his insurance would have covered a rebuild, but Colchester PCT has a policy of centralising practices in larger premises nearer the town.

Dr Baldwin said: 'We were pretty stressed. It's a great relief it is still standing. We may have been semi-compulsorily relocated.'
