Practice offers yoga sessions

Dr Clare Macmichael's practice is offering elderly patients weekly yoga sessions. The south London surgery began the classes after practice nurse Sara Moloney, a yoga fan, recommended it to help patients relieve arthritis pain and improve flexibility.

The local PCT has contracted with the yoga teacher and the practice has won a £2,000 RCGP grant to meet the cost for a year. Future funding will be met by the practice's patient participation group.

'The people going would never have dreamt of going to yoga class before,' said Dr Macmichael, a GP at the Balham practice.

'It is like with prescribing exercise you don't want to refer people who would have gone anyway.'
