Practices ignoring new data standards 'could lose contract'

By Steve Nowottny

Practices who fail to sign up to new data governance standards face fines of up to £5,000 or even risk losing their contract, LMC leaders are warning.

Londonwide LMCs advised the 40% of practices in the capital that have so far failed to sign up to the Information Statement Governance of Compliance to do so immediately. GPs have until 31 March to draw up an action plan and must reach level two compliance by March 2010.

Last October Pulse revealed that PCT managers had threatened to report GPs who refused to sign up to MI5 as a ‘risk to national security', although Connecting for Health later admitted the warning had been ‘completely wrong'.
