Our roundup of news headlines on Monday 22 February.

We start the week with a decidedly good news story on the front page of the Independent, headlined ‘Aids: is the end in sight?'.

The paper quotes Brian Williams, from the South African Centre for Epidemiological Modelling and Analysis, and a scientist ‘at the centre of a radical new approach to fighting Aids', who claims that ‘testing everyone at risk of HIV and treating them with anti-retroviral drugs could eradicate the global epidemic within 40 years'.

An accompanying analysis piece in the paper suggests that ‘in the absence of a vaccine, this is probably our best hope'.

As a report from the House of Commons Science and Technology Committee, out today, argues that homeopathy should not be funded on the NHS, the Daily Mail has a story claiming that Prince Charles is facing accusations that he may have been ‘secretly lobbying ministers in support of using discredited homeopathic medicines on the NHS.'

Lots of the papers cover a possible cure for childhood peanut allergy today. The Guardian reports that researchers in Cambridge are to launch a three-year £1m trial to desensitise allergy sufferers after an extremely promising pilot study.

And finally, if you're depressed by the weather, fed up with February and struggling to get through Monday, the Daily Mail has some cheering advice: ‘Take that power nap – you could wake up smarter.'

Medical researchers at the University of California have found that snoozing for just one hour in the day ‘is enough to increase the brain's ability to learn new facts in the hours that follow'.

But the Mail, which reports that ‘famous daytime dozers' have included Winston Churchill, Bill Clinton and Margaret Thatcher, has a word of warning. ‘It may not make you popular with your boss…'
