Proud of our Practice: GP's sound decision

Patients at the Steppingstones Medical Practice in Dudley no longer have to wait four months for an ultrasound at the local hospital they can be screened at the surgery almost immediately.

Dr Rauf Khan learned how to scan after growing frustrated at the long waiting times his patients had to suffer. He bought a new ultrasound machine from the practice's fundholding savings, attended weekly teaching sessions, and now runs scanning sessions in his spare time.

Dr Khan said: 'I recently picked up an aneurysm on a male patient. I don't like to think what could have happened if he'd been made to wait four months.'

He added: 'The best thing is that my patients are grateful, and that gives me more satisfaction than the money.'
