Proud of our Practice: helping smokers to see the light

Training receptionists to deliver smoking cessation advice has doubled the Moss Grove Surgery's success rate.

More than 80 per cent of patients at the practice in Kingswinford, West Midlands, who were counselled by two receptionists, had stopped smoking four weeks later.

Practice nurses had previously achieved 30 to 40 per cent.

Dr Stephen Parnell, senior GP in the practice, said: 'It's great for GPs as you don't have to struggle to give people smoking advice in consultations and they have appointments outside working hours with someone they recognise.

'There's a lot of patient choice and empowerment using the staff in this innovative way.'

Stephanie Perry (front right) said she and her colleague Jenny Cox (left) had helped more than 100 patients.

She said: 'It's good to be able to do something extra on a one-to-one basis, in a more relaxed way.'
