Pulse magazine – 30 May 1970

Does 32 consultations and eight home visits a day sound fun? This was the typical workload in 1970, which unsurprisingly made general practice unattractive to young doctors.

May 1970 was momentous for the profession, as a BMA report called for a 'specialty of primary medicine' to reshape the view that GPs' work was 'a number of specialties practiced at a relatively superficial level and a lower level of competance'.

It called for advanced training plus a 'test of competence' to select GPs suitable for teaching and academic posts - which became the MRCGP.
