Rawlins: I never blamed BMA for the MMR fiasco

Your readers' outrage at the claim I 'blamed' the BMA for the MMR fiasco would be entirely understandable if true, but it is not. The article published in Pulse on March 22 was based on a complete misrepresentation of my views.

I chaired the Committee on Safety of Medicines at the time Dr Wakefield made his infamous announcement, and the BMA was as supportive then as it has been ever since.

I fully endorse Dr John Chisholm's comments and I want to place on record my appreciation of the courageous stance he has taken on this issue.

Professsor Sir Michael Rawlins
