RCGP attacks Blunkett over heroin plans

The RCGP has voiced concern over Home Secretary David Blunkett's persistent call for more GPs to prescribe heroin to hard-core misusers.

Mr Blunkett told an RCGP conference in Sheffield earlier this month that heroin must be made available to 'all those with clinical need'. He added: 'GPs have a vital role to play in the fight against drug abuse.'

A spokesman insisted the Home Office was not seeking a 'dramatic' increase in the numbers prescribed heroin.

But Dr Clare Gerada, RCGP drug misuse training lead, said only specialist clinics should be able to prescribe the drug.
