RCGP launches factsheet on Darzi plans
By Gareth Iacobucci
The RCGP has launched the second of its factsheets on Lord Darzi's review of the NHS, in a bid to demonstrate the ‘real value and cost effectiveness' of general practice.
Facts being presented by the College include the statistic that GP care for a whole year costs less than a single day's hospital admission, while face to face consultation with a GP costs less to the NHS than an outpatient appointment, accident and emergency, and ambulance calls.
The factsheet follows the College's previous release on polyclinics. The RCGP said it wants to use the scheme to highlight the importance of the doctor-patient relationship and continuity of care, and will be publishing further factsheets on health inequalities and care for patients with multiple conditions in the coming weeks.
The College's own ‘roadmap' to the future of the NHS, which proposes ‘federations' of GP practices working together to provide increased services and deliver improvements in patient care, was published last September.
Dr Maureen Baker, RCGP Honorary Secretary, said, ‘Lord Darzi's review of the NHS is the current priority for GPs. We hope our factsheets will keep patients, health care professionals, politicians, policy makers and the public up to date with the issues relevant to their care and best interests.'
