Registrar place cuts 'illogical'

Dr Nick Jones has hit out at 'illogical' cuts to GP registrar places after he was told he would be left fallow next year.

Dr Jones, a GP in Midsomer Norton, Somerset, said most of the latest crop of registrars in the region gained distinctions in their recent MRCGP exams.

Yet funding for future places has been redirected towards under-doctored areas in the hope that registrars continue practising there.

Dr Jones has a foundationyear doctor due to start in September, but no registrar for the whole year.

He said: 'It's illogical and frustrating. Last year was my first as a trainer and I'm ready and willing to take a registrar on again.'
