Renin inhibitors achieve higher BP cuts than thiazide diuretics

Renin inhibitors provide long-term reductions in blood pressure that are significantly greater than thaizide diuretics, say an group of European researchers.

Their randomised controlled study compared 1,124 patients with hypertension taking the direct renin inhibitor aliskiren or hydrochlorothiazide over one year.

At the end of the study, sitting systolic blood pressure in the aliskiren group was significantly reduced compared with the diuretic-treated group, with reductions of 22.1 and 21.2 mmHg respectively.
