The statistics from the Annual GMC accounts Complaints have been increasing:- 1995…1,503 1997…2,687 2000…4,141 2001…4,219 2004…4,444 2005…4,941 2006…5,087 2008…5,220 2009…5,692 2010…7,022 ..... But GMC Hearings days have been increasing at 10 times the rate:- 1995…90 1997…97 2000…288 2001…723 2004…921 2005…1,301 2006…1,754 2008…2,100 2009…2,518 2010…3,493 ….. Around 50% of interventions by the GMC are on GPs with an annual increase of 20 – 25%. With 60,000 GPs on the register and on currents trends and calculations (by the power expansion series), within 15 years, 115% of GPs will have been deemed impaired by the GMC and will have received sanctions from the GMC - such as the imposition of conditions, suspension or erasure.
