Are NICE guidelines becoming a ‘laughing stock’?

At the RCGP conference a couple of years ago we heard Sir Michael Rawlins (then chairman of NICE) tell the entire GP audience categorically not to adhere to NICE guidance - the clue being in the name guidance. From my memory, he advised very sensibly that we treat the patient in front of us, using our experience and professional judgement, drawing on NICE guidance as appropriate. Why now do we have a fear of deviation from it?
