Why I joined general practice at 51

And Sarah Hay - there's no route to doctor except through medical school. If you're a nurse, you may be able to get onto a graduate course that is 'only' 4 years long and will value your current experience over A*s at A Level. There are websites out there that can help you determine which schools you want to go to - I used the 'Mature Medics' forum on New Media Medicine a lot when I was starting but it looks like it's fallen into disuse a bit. One thing that can't be ignored is the enormous expense of doing it now - you need to be sure that you can afford to build up £40,000 of debt (at least) with the tuition fees and other costs. :(
