Wheels come off PM's seven-day GP access drive

Di have spent today at the Commissioning Live event at Manchester and am writing this from the train home. Every GP to whom I spoke today said that if they had striped this to a greater or lesser extent, it wasn't about the money as they ended up exhausted and we're offering a lower quality service to their patients. What was on offer was quantity-of-appointment not a quality service. All said they would be scaling back any weekend offer or stopping altogether, except on a very large collaborative basis, typically one surgery open in a CCG. An elegant solution, but for many patients, A&E will be closer than that surgery. Say there is one in the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough CCG or just one in NEW Devon. I can't see many patients with a need sufficiently great travelling across those areas for an appointment with a doctor they don't know who may or may not have access to the full medical record. But it is an elegant solution. DH can say there is access everywhere, it won't cost much and most GPs get the weekend off to the same pattern as currently.
