Opioids: GPs set to be central in reduction drive

"Although patients with chronic pain do receive reviews, Johnson says the process is not well defined; it doesn’t have a QOF indicator like asthma" This is the heart of the problem though. Asthma care is theoretically simple. PEFR - tick. 3 RCGP questions - tick. Meds adjusted according to stepwise chart - tick. Managing chronic pain cannot (with today's level of knowledge) be reduced to an equivalent algorithm, and will always be a murky compromise between science, patient acceptability, GP boundaries and pragmatism.
