AstraZeneca has launched Seroquel XL (quetiapine prolonged release), a once dailyformulation (atypical antipsychotic) licensed for the treatment of schizophrenia and manic episodes associated with bipolar disorder, for adult patients in the UK.1

Seroquel XL allows patients to receive the recommended daily dose of 600mg by the second day of treatment.1 Seroquel XL has been shown to be effective on the symptoms of bipolar mania and is not associated with an increased risk of treatment emergent depression compared to placebo.2

It has also been shown to be effective on the positive symptoms of schizophrenia.3

Clinical trials have also found that Seroquel XL is effective in preventing relapse in patients stabilised on Seroquel XL in schizophrenia and helps patients achieve remission in bipolar mania.2,4 Studies have shown that Seroquel XL, has a tolerability profile consistent with that of Seroquel IR (quetiapine).1,5-8
