Shutters fall for last time on his surgery

Harold Shipman's death came just four days after the shutters on his Market Street practice in Hyde were lowered for the final time.

The GPs who took over Shipman's patients more than two years ago finally moved into new premises last week.

Dr Amy Cummings said the practice had asked for a move as soon as possible and was relieved to finally be leaving. 'The shadow of him was always there,' she said.

'We have had to look after a traumatised population with lots of underlying problems from three different sites.

'My feeling is of relief that he's gone.

'If he had survived he would not have answered people's questions as to why he did not even admit to himself what he had done.'
