'Sign here' haggard PCO man tells GP

Dr Michael McKenna was presented with his GMS contract by a 'haggard-looking' member of his PCO – who then asked him to sign it on the spot.

Dr McKenna, a GP in Belfast, said delays by the Department of Health in the province meant senior members of Eastern Local Health Board were forced to deliver contracts in person to GPs two days before the March 31 deadline.

'I was asked if there was any chance of me signing it now. I asked if they could just let me look at it over the next couple of days,' he said.

Dr McKenna said the health board had been left in an impossible situation. He added: 'I take my hat off to them. They did very well in the circumstances.'
