Statin switch better than doubling dose

26 Feb 08

Switching to 10mg ezetimibe/ 40mg simvastatin is more effective than doubling the statin dose for secondary prevention, suggests UK data.

Researchers at the Royal United Hospital in Bath studied 424 patients admitted with an acute coronary event while taking a statin dose that could be doubled.

Half the patients were given ezetimibe/ simvastatin and the other half had their statin dose doubled.

After three months 86% of those taking the combination had achieved a LDL-C level of less than 2.5 mmol/l compared to 72% taking the double statin dose.
