Cholesterol genes raise heart attack risk
22 Mar 08
A combination of gene variants strongly associated with cholesterol level raises the risk of heart attack, stroke or sudden death, say US researchers.
The presence of the nine single-nucleotide polymorphisms was analysed in 5,414 Swedish adults.
Higher genotype scores were associated with higher LDL and lower HDL cholesterol levels.
People who had genotype scores of 11 or higher had a 63% greater risk of a cardiovascular event than did those whose scores were nine or lower.
