Withdrawing psychotropics cuts falls in elderly
15 Apr 09
Gradually withdrawing psychotropic medicines from older patients living in the community reduces the rate of falls by 66%, the authors of a new Gold standard meta-analysis have found.
The Cochrane review of 111 randomised controlled trials of over 55,000 participants also found programmes that modify the drugs prescribed by primary care doctors significantly reduced the risk of falling, by 39%.
Group exercise programmes, Tai Chi and individually prescribed exercise carried out at home all had significant beneficial effects on the risk and rate of falls in patients over 65, the researchers concluded.
