‘MRSA-proof pyjamas’

03 Dec 07

Pyjamas made with silver thread will protect patients from MRSA infection, according to the Sun, Daily Telegraph, Mirror and Daily Mail.

THE SOURCE: ‘Sleepsafe’ pyjamas containing silver thread have gone on sale at Marks & Spencer costing £45. They are currently being formally evaluated in a few NHS hospitals but M&S has become the first store to sell them directly to the public.

EXPERT VIEW: Dr Mark Enright, medical microbiologist at University of Wales NHS Trust, said: ‘The idea is that the silver comes into contact with the skin and kills bacteria including MRSA.

‘It’s an interesting theory but no more than that – there’s no hard data I’ve seen that it has any impact on infection rates. It rather smacks of an attempt to cash in on patients’ real or imagined worries.’
