Survey finds half of GP lists closed

Up to half of the practices in some of Britain's largest cities have now closed their lists to new patients, according to two new surveys.

Birmingham was the worst hit, with 46 out of 100 practices having closed lists, according to a survey for BBC3 news.

Manchester was found to have 39 out of 100 lists closed, London 37 out of 100 and Glasgow 20 out of 100.

Eight of 75 practices in Cardiff were not taking new patients.

A separate survey by Liberal Democrat health spokesman Paul Burstow found 53 out of 100 surgeries in London had closed their lists in the past year. One in three is currently closed.
