System switch 'an awful prospect'

GPs in Derbyshire have slammed a local pathology

service for refusing to give practices test results over the phone.

The GPs said they do not always receive results electronically via PathLinks and have been frustrated when they have tried to get them by the phone because the lab is worried that they will be taken down wrongly.

Derbyshire LMC chair Dr John Grenville said the problem came to light over warfarin monitoring and INR results. The lab will only ring results through if the INR is higher than 5.5.

'If you don't have the results you can't tell patients whether to remain on their current dose,' Dr Grenville said. 'PathLinks is not as good as they think and not telling GPs over the phone could be dangerous.'
