The Government’s agenda is clear: to cut GPs’ pay

GPs’ self-employed status has been a thorn in the side of the Department of Health for decades (‘Investigation: GP practices at breaking point’).

In fact, if you were designing primary care from scratch, you’d want lots of clone GPs all doing the same thing and being paid much less than full-time GPs get now and they would have to cover the full 24 hours, 365 days a year for the same pay.

The Government’s perception is that GPs are overpaid for what they do; hence the increasingly punitive QOF targets and contract changes that will result in most GPs experiencing an increasingly rapid decline in income.

The Government’s agenda to reduce GP income used to be hidden. It isn’t any more.
