Waste of medicine

I was bemused by the news report 'GP targets £4m medicine waste' (October 28). North Devon PCT appears to be embarking on a 'new' pilot scheme.

Perhaps they are unaware of the National Medicines Management Services Collaborative run by the National Prescribing Centre. The first wave of this involved more than 100 practices that have completed their first year and are well into the second.

Before the PCT goes headlong into synchronising prescriptions, this was one area the first-wave practices found most difficult to make significant improvements and there is little if any data on long-term benefits.

Decay rates after synchronisation are currently being studied within my own practice, the results of which may make this very time-consuming process a little less appealing. They should visit
