West Sussex - earned autonomy model

There are eight localities in West Sussex, and the leads sit on the PCT’s strategic commissioning board.

There are eight localities in West Sussex, and the leads sit on the PCT's strategic commissioning board.

Dr Amit Bhargava, chair of the Crawley Locality Commissioning Group, is an NHS Alliance lead for PBC in the region. He estimates that 24 PBC projects have gone through his locality commissioning board – ‘so we are not short of ideas'. But there's a gap between ‘the policy statements of the PCT and how they deliver the ambitions of senior management'.

Projects in the pipeline include training in end-of-life care, community therapies, ENT services and counselling.

The locality leads are working with external consultants to develop a programme for earned autonomy that each practice will sign up to. This will help to agree governance issues on approval of business cases and financial investment.
