Why I've had to give up family planning

Dr Margaret Safranek has had to give up her work in a family planning clinic because she has found it impossible to access compulsory update training.

Dr Safranek, a GP in Muswell Hill, north-west London, has tried and failed to enrol on a Faculty of Family Planning training course, which would certify her to fit long-acting contraceptive devices in her clinic. Cuts in sexual health funding have left GPs waiting up to three years to finish the course.

Dr Safranek said: 'The Government is closing clinics but not offering GPs the necessary training to allow us to fit coils in general practice. In imposing these rules they're reducing services, not improving it. I'm having to turn patients away.'
