Why our new referrals centre causes us concern

From Dr Will O'Gorman, Bicester

I read with interest 'Referral centres anger GPs' (News, 9 February). I am a GP working in Oxfordshire and our new referral management centre has generated an enormous amount of concern regarding confidentiality and accountability, the way it was sprung on us without warning and, particularly, the enormous and totally unacceptable extra delays our patients are suffering.

Consultant clinics in Oxford have been running half-empty because referrals have not been processed and it took six weeks before we had any acknowledgement of receipt of any of our letters.

I share all the concerns expressed by LMC representatives from Kent and Essex but was surprised and disappointed that our own LMC did not seem to have attempted to reflect the views of the majority of Oxfordshire GPs who as far as I am aware do not feel in any sense that this is a reasonable way to cut costs.
