Would GPs' prescribing stand scrutiny?

Your news report on nurse prescribing (January 20) makes me ashamed to be a doctor. Where's the evidence for this attack? Nurses are part of the team, we should be working together to benefit patients. Nurses at Southampton's walk-in centre prescribe according to national guidelines and after consultation with local research groups and microbiologists. The records are entirely electronic and performance is rigorously audited.

Nurses are good at empowering patients to manage their own minor illness. I wonder how doctors would fare if their prescribing was subject to such close scrutiny.
