GP trainees to be interviewed on how well their values align with the NHS

Prospective GPs and medical students will now be interviewed on how well their values and behaviour ‘align’ with the values of the NHS, Health Education England has announced.

The new Values Based Recruitment strategy will apply to all students and trainees to ensure that recruits aren’t just suitably qualified, but can work effectively in teams and deliver ‘excellent patient care and experience’.

HEE, which has been mandated to get 3,250 additional GPs in training by 2016, says the scheme is part of an increasing focus on values in the wake of the problems at Mid-Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust, and will ensure the NHS isn’t just recruiting people with ‘the right skills and in the right numbers’.

A spokesperson said: ‘We may not be able to predict exactly how we will train our future workforce or what the NHS will look like in 2029, however one thing we do know is that the values we require from people in the NHS in order to be able to care for patients will remain the same.’

This comes at a time when HEE is failing to recruit enough GP trainees, with 40% of posts unfilled in some areas.

Pulse revealed yesterday that GPC would be petitioning HEE to do more to provide equitable funding and exposure to general practice during undergraduate medical education.

  • University courses are not in place for specific employers. You should still be able to do an economics degree even if your thoughts are not in line with Natwest, the World Bank or the Bank of England.

    Surely the same applies to a medical degree. They are not a vocational college for the NHS but rather a university degree which one has the right to study based on ability alone. You should not be (and are not) bound to NHS employment with a medical degree and if that remains the case it should not matter if your views are in keeping with the NHS.

    What if you want to study a medical degree because it prepares you well for a career as an actor on Holby City?

    I think variety is the spice of life.
    The only requirement for becoming a GP is compassion and academic sucess. The academic success needed to get into Medicine is greater than that needed to become an -Say an IT Engineer -which can pay better and possibility of becoming a billionaire ( How many doctors/GP`s are in the billionaires list?).
    Unless they feel they are suited for this, people don`t become doctors as the money is average and the potential is even less. Also if only bleeding hearts became GP`s -who the heck will run CCG`s?
    What are the NHS values when the present government is trying to privatize same.

    If anyone is unsuitable they usually leave quickly!

    The author of the article is controversial, but the GMC likes him so the article is relevant.

  • BMJ published study. 2003 - based on medical students from 1975 -followed upto 2002.
    Results of achievement tests, in this case A level grades, which are particularly used for selection of students in the United Kingdom, have long term predictive validity for undergraduate and postgraduate careers.
    In contrast, a test of ability or aptitude (AH5) was of little predictive validity for subsequent medical careers.

  • What??? Medical students are trained to be DOCTORS not NHS employees. Seperate medicine from the NHS in your head and keep it seperate. It helps to see things more clearly.

  • As above, we should train Doctors, not NHS slaves. Ironically, patients frequently benefit when the medical profession is strong, as we are much more likely to secure better funding and treatment (=better advocacy for patients) and resist some of the political nonsense from governments of all flavours.
