CQC obtains magistrates order to close practice immediately

The CQC has temporarily withdrawn a practice’s registration after seeking an ‘urgent’ court order from local magistrates’ court to immediately close their doors.

The Grafton Surgery in Canvey, Essex was forced to close on Tuesday, with a note on the practice’s website telling patients they can still get an appointment at the Oaklands Surgery in the same building.

Additional staff have been made available at Oaklands to cope with the increased demand.

Further detail on the reason for the closure was not available while ‘investigations are live and on-going’.

But NHS Castle Point and Rochford CCG said they wanted to reassure patients that they will receive care they’re entitled to and would be writing with further information.

CCG Accountable Officer Ian Stidston said: ‘Following a recent inspection, the Care Quality Commission (CQC) applied to the Magistrates Court for an urgent cancellation of the CQC registration of Grafton Surgery, Canvey Island under section 30 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008.

‘As a result of the Magistrates Court upholding this action on 27 June 2016, Grafton Surgery is temporarily closed with immediate effect. As investigations are live and on-going we are not cited on the detail surrounding the decision but wanted to make you aware of the situation.’

  • it will be interesting to see the CQC's reasons as the intelligent monitoring report seems to be ok - maybe it was a lack of fire safety training for locums , similar colored bins, or dated carpets? whatever it is i'm sure it will be clinically focused.

  • Essex is a car crash. Usual NHSE/CCG duck speak with total failure to support practices struggling every day at the orifice.

Practice gets £130/patient/year according to last HSCIC figures, compared to £168 for the highest funded in their CCG area.

    Inspection can't fix it.

  • Have seen CQC nearly do the same elsewhere. Understand the cynical comments but that particular case was entirely justified.
