GMC

The purpose of the General Medical Council is to protect, promote and maintain the health and safety of the public by ensuring proper standards in the practice of medicine.

Under the Medical Act 1983, the GMC has four main functions:

  • Keeping up-to-date registers of qualified doctors
  • Fostering good medical practice
  • Promoting high standards of medical education and training
  • Dealing firmly and fairly with doctors whose fitness to practise is in doubt (see above)

Following the merger of the Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board with the GMC on April 1 2010, the GMC is now responsible for regulating all stages of medical education in the UK.

The GMC has offices in London, Manchester, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast.
